Public Policy: Things lost *in the pursuit of religious piety and public policy

Have you noticed that compassionate conservative “Christians” want the alleged Lockerby guy to roast in hell? Very Christian. Of course, elected officials who would rather engage in pandering and demagoguery than a real job---like the good lapdogs they are---aren’t missing a chance to posture, rant and rave.

Just this week the Brits’ Prime Minister, David Cameron, was here to join the chorus and let Americans (with whom the Brits also want an Israeli-like “an unbreakable bond”) know that if it was up to him (Cameron) that Al Megrahi-guy would be dead or rotting in prison.

This is no surprise to me. I have long understood that compassionate conservative christians both affect our public policy and are a long, long way from resembling anything “Christ-like.”

For those whose short term (or even long term) memory doesn’t serve the Lockerbie story is more than a generation old.

Pan Am Flight 103 was Pan American World Airways' third daily scheduled transatlantic flight from London Heathrow Airport to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. On Wednesday 21 December 1988, the aircraft flying this route—a Boeing 747-121 named Clipper Maid of the Seas—was destroyed by a bomb, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members.[1] Eleven people in Lockerbie, southern Scotland, were killed as large sections of the plane fell in and around the town, bringing total fatalities to 270. As a result, the event has been named by the media as the Lockerbie Bombing.

On 31 January 2001, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, a Libyan, was convicted of involvement in the bombing and sentenced to life imprisonment in Scotland. His co-defendant, Lamin Khalifah Fhimah, was unanimously acquitted. In June 2007...”

Just as was the case with our home-grown “terrists” Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols the compassionate conservative Christians are worked up into a dither. Their primal lust for blood is primordial---not very Christ-like---just primordial.

The take-away lesson or teaching point? These are the folks (compassionate conservative Christians) that act as a rudder on our public policy.

Little wonder the founders didn’t stand-up either a theocracy (which those who originally came here---had braved the Atlantic to flee) or a democracy (which the founders believed to be no less tyrannical than a monarchy---which they had also fled).
